2022-2023 Scholarship Recipient

India Whaley

Please join us in congratulating Ms. India Whaley as a 2022-2023 Matthew J. Perry Scholarship recipient!  Ms. Whaley is a 2023 Juris Doctor/IMBA Candidate at the University of South Carolina.  The scholarship award is $500.00/semester for two (2) years, provided the award recipient satisfies the renewal requirements of enrollment and maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA.

The eligibility requirements are outlined below:

  • Be a citizen of the U.S.;
  • Have successfully completed the first year of law school;
  • Have and maintain a GPA of at least 2.5; and
  • Have completed at least 25 hours of community service (preferred but not required)

About the Scholarship

As of December 15, 2017, the South Carolina Black Lawyers Association (“SCBLA”), with the assistance of the SC Bar Foundation (“SCBF”), set its goal to fund the Matthew J. Perry Scholarship (“MJPS”).  The scholarship program was established in honor of the Honorable Matthew J. Perry, Federal District Judge, South Carolina and Civil Rights Legend. 

All contributions are tax deductible as a result of our newly established relationship with the SCBF, a non-profit corporation with tax exempt status under 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code.
